I have VW Jetta (2006) and it's almost at 50,000 miles. The dealership gave me a maintenance schedule with a LONG list of items that needed to be done once it's reached 50K. It's around $500+ for all the items. Is everything on the list necessary? Engine Oil - change
Engine Filter - change
Windshield Washer Fluid - check level
Automatic Shift Lock - check operation
Brake System - check damage/leaks, pad thickness, fluid level
Wheels - rotate from front to rear
Service Interval Display - Reset, where applicable.
Tire Tread Depth %26amp; Tire Pressures - Check.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System Sensors - Check, where applicable
Air Bag System, Visual check every 12 months regardless of mileage
Brake Fluid, Change every 2 years regardless of mileage.
Replace air filter element and clean housing, Every 4 years for vehicles driven less than 60,000 miles / 97,000 km in 6 years.
Replace tire filler bottle, Every 4 years, regardless of mileage. Observe expiration date.
Replace spark plug
Should I be doing the car maintenance the dealership suggests?
you should keep up with the maintenance.but the dealers are only out to make money.the dealers will say any thing to make money.

If you bought the car new, go over the warranty carefully. Some brands actually specify an oil to be used. You definitely don't want to void one by not doing what they request,
Well if you want to spend 500.00 for 50.00 worth of work ? I would never take a vehicle to a dealer unless it's a warranty issue. I work on cars for a living, and for 500.00 I would service your vehicle and tune-up , wash , wax, clean interior , flush transmission , fiush radiator , new brakes , ect.... get my point ? Get a local shop to do it for 50.00 !! Trust me !!
YUP!
Yes. Doing the routine maintenance will extend the life of your car by years and years. My Toyota is about to roll over 200,000 miles, by doing the routine maintenance recommended by the manufacturer, I'll still be driving my car for at least another 200,000 miles.
I currently work for a major Korean auto manufacturer and have 9 years experience in the auto field
what i have seen is the dealer only wants to make money not make your car last or save you money
change your oil
change your trans fluid
change you air filter and spark plugs
and at a 100,000 miles change your timing belt
and your car will last , if its not broken dont fix it
