Hi im a new driver , and my friend just gave me his car, and there is a crack on the windshield. I've read that a small chip turns into a huge crack, but can someone explaing how that happens, and how long it usually takes? so i can decide if i wanna invest on changing my windsheild now, or save up for a quality one.
Tnx ^^
Windshield Crack Question?
If it's a small chip, it can be fixed at a place doing windshield repair. It costs about $60 (but only if it's a small chip and maybe a small crack, no longer than 2-3 inches.)
Yes, it will become a ling crack, if you do not take care of it. When will it happen? Maybe tomorrow, maybe in a month or two.
I fixed windshields on several of my cars at those places and they did a very good job every time, but the cracks were small.
Do it before it's too late. Just look in Yellow Pages under %26quot;Auto Glass%26quot; and you'll find a place.
One more thing. They sell windshield repair kits at auto parts stores, but they do not really work well.
Windshield Crack Question?
If you have a crack in your windshield, not a long just a rock chip then your are probably in for a new windshield int the near future. Cracks generally can't be fixed, they will only get worse with time and variances in temperature. Usually the first really cold morning when you turn your defroster on will cause a crack to spread from side to side. A rock chip can be fixed, or stabilized enough so that it won't continue to spread, but if its in your line of sight or generally in an area that your wipers cover as they run then it may not be repairable either. Some insurance companies will pay for all or part of a rock chip repair rather than buy a new windshield in the future. Check with your insurance company, see if you have glass coverage and what their policy is on rock chip repairs and take it to a reputable repair shop to have it fixed.
My suggestion is that if there is a crack and you do have car insurance make sure you have glass coverage and just claim it. It would be the best decision in the long run, because the longer you wait the bigger the crack will get. Especially in the extreme hot or cold.
most glass repair shops will tell you if the chip is smaller than aquarter it can be fixed any bigger than that you will need a new windshielf. as to how long, you could go for a long time and then all of a sudden crack lines will start to appear
If the crack in the windshield is ANYWHERE in your line of sight as a driver, you WILL have to have the damage fixed or window replaced before you have your car INSPECTED.... Cars with chips, or cracks in the windshield that are about EYE LEVEL in the driver's side will NOT pass inspection ---it's an OBSTRUCTED VIEW.
